How forecasts work

Weather methodology and data sources

Nigeria Weather turns provider forecasts into clear, consistent answers for Nigerian cities. Forecasts are estimates, not observations or safety warnings, and can change as new data arrives.

Forecast source

Open-Meteo is the primary forecast source. When its data is unavailable or incomplete, a fresh complete forecast from MET Norway may be selected as a fallback and is labelled on the city page. MET Norway data is used under CC BY 4.0; provider data is normalized and summarized by Nigeria Weather.

Updates and freshness

Current conditions are normally refreshed more often than longer-range forecasts. Each city page shows its local update time and data source. If an update is delayed, the last successful forecast may remain visible with a stale-data notice; information that is too old is removed until a successful refresh arrives.

Consistent city forecasts

Provider data is validated and normalized into consistent units before publication. Times are shown in West Africa Time using the Africa/Lagos timezone. Public page requests read already-published forecast data and do not contact the provider while a reader waits.

MET Norway Locationforecast values near the current time are model forecasts, not readings from a weather station. Unsupported values are omitted rather than estimated.

How rain answers are written

Rain wording uses the available rolling seven-day forecast. Prominent rain guidance appears only when a future hourly or daily forecast reaches at least a 20% chance or 0.1 mm of expected rainfall, so city pages are not dominated by irrelevant rain questions during long dry periods. The page reports the earliest qualifying period, peak probability and expected accumulation across affected days. When hourly data is available, timing uses broad overnight, morning, afternoon or evening periods.

Heat and wind highlights

The page checks the remaining published hourly forecast for extreme heat and very strong wind. Heat is highlighted when air or apparent temperature reaches 40°C for two consecutive hourly records, or when fresh current conditions already meet that level. Wind is highlighted when sustained speed reaches 63 km/h or gusts reach 90 km/h. Cards report the earliest period, peak values and number of affected days.

These conditional highlights use fresh or stale-but-usable forecast data and disappear when data expires. They are informational model guidance, not official weather warnings; readers should follow instructions from official local authorities.

Limits and uncertainty

A city forecast represents a model estimate near the listed city coordinates. Tropical showers can be highly localised, so rainfall can differ across neighbourhoods and timing may shift. Use official emergency and aviation services for warnings or safety-critical decisions.
